WASHINGTON – In a new op-ed for InsideSources’ DC Journal, Competitiveness Coalition Chairman Ronna McDaniel warned that the newly reintroduced American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA) would harm American innovation and risk our national security as our competition with China for global leadership in the technology space hits a fever pitch.
“Having failed to pass in previous sessions of Congress, while losing support each time it has been introduced, AICOA represents a direct assault on America’s innovators and economic drivers…This bill would not only substantially degrade the consumer experience but also harm America’s global competitiveness and credibility,” wrote McDaniel, a former four-term chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). “AICOA borrows liberally from the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Passed in 2022, the DMA applies onerous restrictions on American companies operating overseas. The DMA has led to delayed product launches, restricted features for European users, and security concerns due to mandated “interoperability,” which forces platforms to open their systems to outside parties, potentially exposing user data to unvetted actors.”
“AICOA is bad news and represents a dangerous line of thinking about how the government should interact with business and markets. We have seen the kind of damage this philosophy can inflict, and America cannot afford to make the same mistake twice. AICOA must return to its rightful home: the fanciful minds of academics with little regard for the economic consequences of their actions,” concluded McDaniel.
