Competitiveness Coalition Releases First Television Ad “Threatening Overreach”

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Competitiveness Coalition, a group led by former Ambassador Scott Brown and 17 other free market organizations and individuals, launched its first television advertisement, entitled, “Threatening Overreach.” The spot is part of a six-figure advocacy campaign focused on lawmakers in Washington D.C.

The spot zeroes in on the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (S.2992), legislation championed by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, which media reports indicate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer intends to bring forward this summer. In recent days, voices ranging from Larry Summers to the Wall Street Journal editorial board have warned the bill and such “hipster antitrust” policies could exacerbate inflation, which climbed to 8.6% in May, the highest level since December 1981.

“Inflation is out of control, and Congress is poised to make a bad situation worse by moving forward with this legislation,” said Competitiveness Coalition Chair Scott Brown. “We cannot be pouring cold water on our economy while also giving a handout to the Chinese Communist Party, but that is precisely what the American Innovation And Choice Online Act would do. All lawmakers, especially conservatives, should stand up to Chuck Schumer and Amy Klobuchar and block this bill.”

In addition to the television ad, the Competitiveness Coalition has mobilized against S. 2992 by generating thousands of phone calls and emails to offices of select lawmakers (both in Washington and state offices) as well as digital advertisements in and around their home states.

“THREATENING OVERREACH” TV:30

VO: “Innovation has put the United States at the forefront of job creation, lifesaving scientific breakthroughs and cutting-edge technologies.

But Biden-style Washington overreach and overzealous regulation are threatening American innovation and helping foreign competitors.

New legislation sponsored by liberal D.C. politicians would damage America’s competitive spirit and allow countries like China to catch up.

Stop federal government overreach. Protect our economy. Tell your legislator to oppose this job-killing legislation.”

Counting 17 small business, consumer, and taxpayer advocate groups, the coalition is focused on preserving American competitiveness and defeating misguided bills such as the American Innovation and Choice Online Act and Open App Markets Act.
